Overview: "What do I shoot today?" (WDIST) is an advanced Excel workbook designed as a comprehensive simulator for multi-distance shooting matches.

Building this simulator required significant development effort. The workbook contains multiple integrated spreadsheets:

  • "Targets": Contains a comprehensive database of standard targets, including ISSF and NRA specifications.
  • "Matches": Links directly to the targets database to define specific shooting matches by establishing distances and the exact number of shots per stage.
  • "Sheet1": The core simulation engine capable of handling highly complex competition formats-such as the 90-shot NRA 6-distance Fullbore Prone Regional Match Course, featuring multi-target layouts and specialized square scoring rings.

Inputs & Capabilities

  • Full support for both SI (Metric) and Imperial units.
  • Configurable match parameters, barrel profiles, loads, and scope configurations.
  • Distance-dependent varying wind speed simulations to test performance under changing atmospheric conditions. Note on the wind model: While highly effective for scenario planning, the current wind variation model is driven by practical shooting intuition rather than a fully rigorous scientific atmospheric model.

Outputs & Results

  • Simulated shot placement distributions and score predictions across multiple distances.
  • Comprehensive tactical breakdown for complex match courses.

*Note: The majority of development time was spent engineering robust workarounds for legacy bugs and version incompatibilities between Excel 2003 and modern 64-bit Excel environments. These specific accommodations are clearly marked directly within the VBA code.
